09 Feb Pelvic Health & How PT Fits In
Women of all ages face a wide variety of pelvic health concerns: myofascial pelvic pain, leaking, lower back pain, pregnancy and post-partum care and more. In fact, many women aren’t aware that Physical Therapy also has a pelvic healthcare focus, along with the well-known musculoskeletal areas of treatment.
How PT Can Help:
A really good example is bladder leakage. Treated as both common -and sometimes inevitable – especially with aging and after childbirth, many women are only offered specialty pads, one-size-fits-all exercises, and occasionally medication. While leakage is common, it isn’t normal – which is an important distinction.
The great thing about Physical Therapy is how individualized it is. Unlike a cookie-cutter solution, a Physical Therapist assesses each patient specifically and then develops a custom treatment plan for that unique patient. For an issue like bladder leaks, the generic exercises recommended in magazines and hand-outs often won’t fix the problem. Sometimes, a pelvic health Physical Therapist will determine that specific muscle tightness is a problem – not muscle weakness, and the Physical Therapist will devise the appropriate treatment regimen.
