Movement Matters: Time to Bloom this Spring


April showers bring May flowers, or so goes the eternal promise of springtime. It is a play that proves true year after year, regardless of how severe the winter, or how slow the onset of spring. Never do we hear, however, who is responsible for planting the seeds and the bulbs that are equally responsible for the flowers, or who will do the prep work, the weeding, and the pruning?

As I consider the beautiful unfolding of spring, I can’t help but think about how many of our bodies are awaiting a stimulus for growth and development that will transition us from our late winter state of hibernation towards spring and on to summer. Have we done the necessary seed selection, planting, and fertilizing so that as the rain falls and the weather warms, we may bloom like the flowers and trees around us?

Critical to our success, regardless of our level of preparedness or our goals for activity this summer, is the gradual increase in activity and a sustained program that meets our needs for balance as the weather beckons us outward. And as we set our sights on the first 5K run or 25 mile ride of the spring, we can continue to build our foundation of flexibility, strength, and endurance with yoga, Pilates, weight-training, spinning, elliptical or stairmaster workouts, interval circuit training, and treadmill workouts. Regardless of the mode of exercise, continuing to work on a balance of activities will pay off all summer long.

Sometimes, spring reveals seeds, bulbs, shrubs, or trees that have sustained critical damage during the long dark winter. Sometimes April showers don’t bring May flowers.
