RUNNING PERFORMANCE & INJURY PREVENTION

The annual rate of injury for runners ranges from 30-50%, according to multiple studies. It could be a coin toss if you end up completing your running season or sidelined on the couch! We know how important it is for runners to stay healthy and out on the road or trails. Body One’s Dr. Tara Gilreath has developed a unique program to help runners perform better and reduce their injury risk with specific assessments and targeted exercise.

Common Injuries related to running:

  • Knee pain “Runner’s Knee”
  • Hip pain
  • IT Band Syndrome
  • Achilles’ tendinitis
  • Plantar Fasciitis
  • Stress Fractures
  • Back pain

Risk factors for running-related injuries:

  • Runners with less than 3 years of experience are 2.5-3x more likely to sustain an injury
  • Runner with a sudden increase in training load (weekly mileage, pace, days of training) are at increased risk
  • Runners with a previous injury in the past year are 2.6-2.7x more likely to sustain a subsequent injury

Dr. Gilreath sees many runners as part of her specialty practice and has also completed research into injury prevention specifically for runners. As a dedicated runner who runs often and has completed multiple marathons, she understands the drive and passion that runners feel for their sport. Dr. Gilreath has helped runners with nagging injuries run pain-free and has also helped healthy runners work on improving technique to reach their goals.

Dr. Gilreath’s program includes:

Movement Analysis – Dr. Gilreath will watch you run and move, and assess your movement for any areas of improvement or weakness. If you have specific concerns, she’ll examine your movement and determine what may be causing your issue. Dr. Gilreath will discuss the result of your running analysis and her specific recommendations.

Home Exercise Program – Dr. Gilreath will provide detailed instructions in your home exercise program. You’ll work on specific exercises designed to address areas which need improved strength, movement, and/or flexibility. This work will help improve how you move and run!

Video-assisted Gait Analysis & Gait Re-training – Dr. Gilreath will record you running on a treadmill and analyze your unique running gait. She’ll show you your gait in slow-motion and discuss her findings. Dr. Gilreath will make specific recommendations and will work with you to alter your gait for maximum benefit.
