13 Jul Take Your Workout to the Water!
Exercise is great for improving how you feel, boosting your mood, and helping you live a healthier life. Yet, even the most dedicated fitness buff can end up getting into a rut over time. Instead of throwing in the towel, grab your towel and take your workout to the water! Pool workouts are great for a lot of reasons: not just a terrific way to stay cool, but it also can improve flexibility, strength, and cardiovascular health.
A major benefit of working out in the water is the resistance it provides. Every movement you make in the water works opposing muscles simultaneously. An example of this is doing arm curls: while you’re pulling up, you’re working the bicep and as you push down you strengthen the tricep. All this without the wear and tear you’d have with a workout on dry land!
Another major benefit is the buoyancy of water. After an injury or as our bodies age, traditional exercise can be hard on the the body. Many people find themselves occasionally struggling with favorite activities as they age and their bodies don’t bounce back as quickly. Buoyancy reduces your weight in the water, which leads to a great workout – but with less stress on joints and bones.
Water is not only great for resistance training, but it strengthens and works muscle groups that are not worked as hard on land environment. Water fitness helps develop a strong core: back, abdominals and oblique muscles. A weak core can lead to a host of other problems, such as back pain for example.
If you want to add a challenge to your aquatic fitness, you can! There are many products available to increase resistance and improve strength in the water such as: buoyancy belts, dumbbells, weighted gloves and noodles, and more.
Following an injury, it can be challenging to get back into exercise. Water workouts can provide a great environment for those healing from an injury. The water environment allows an individual to get moving, placing less stress on joints than many other exercise options. Cyclists and runners can often be found in the pool cross training or rehabbing a nagging issue before it becomes a more serious one. The pool is a great resource for athletes of all kinds.
