When Can I Run? What You Need to Know About Sports After Injury

When can I go back to running? When can I get on my bike? How far can I walk? How soon before I can… fill-in-the-blank? People often use Dr. Google to ask about their return to sport after injury. As physical therapists, we also hear this question from our patients a LOT. And the most common answer is: it depends. As much as someone is impatient to get back to their usual routine, there isn’t any standard answer. One person may return sooner and someone else may take longer.

Factors That May Affect Your Return:

  • The type of injury
  • The severity of the injury
  • Your age and health
  • Factors like stress, sleep, diet
  • Your participation with a return-to-sport program
  • PT attendance and follow through

Active people generally don’t love being stuck on the couch; however, depending on your circumstances, you may need to reduce or stop your favorite activity in order to get better. Even if you need to take a break, you may still be able to stay active with cross-training. An injured runner may be able to swim or an injured cyclist may be able to do gentle Yoga. But if you want to recover sooner – and get back to your sport and activities- timely treatment and following your treatment plan are your best options.

How to Help Your Recovery:

  • Get enough sleep
  • Visit a physical therapist and/or other medical provider
  • Eat a healthy diet
  • Stay hydrated
  • Follow your treatment plan
