07 Jan Feeling Unstable? Falling Often? We Have the Answer for Balance Problems
It’s one of those things that you take for granted…until it’s gone and then boy, do you miss it: your balance. When you have balance problems even simple activities like standing, sitting, and walking can be difficult or even dangerous. We tell you what causes balance problems, as well as what you can do about it – helping to get back on track and staying safe.
What causes balance problems? There are four systems in the body that affect balance and at least one if not more aren’t working properly to cause balance issues: vision, inner ear, muscular system, and awareness of body position.
Balance problems can also be caused by medical conditions like:
- Stroke
- Parkinson’s Disease
- Arthritis
- Diabetes
- Brain Injury
- Multiple Sclerosis
- Spinal Cord Injury
- …and others.
Balance problems can affect anyone, of any age, but are more common in older adults. In fact, according to the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) in people 75 years or older, 70% have “abnormal” balance. Despite the potential serious nature of balance issues, there are treatment options available. One of the best treatment options is seeing a physical therapist. A physical therapist can assess your condition and help determine the cause of your balance problems. S/he can then design a custom treatment plan and exercise program for you to do at home. Your physical therapist can help you reduce your fall risk, increase strength, improve flexibility, improve mobility and balance, increase activity levels, and also reduce your fear of falling. Sometimes the fear of falling leads to fear-avoidance, in which the person will stop his or her activities in order to try and prevent a fall. In the end, fear-avoidance often does more harm than good, as it leads to decreased strength, mobility, balance, and confidence. Your physical therapist can help address the cause/s of your balance problems, as well as the effects and help you deal with any emotional concerns based on your condition.
