Soon you’ll be bombarded with ads for fitness memberships, apps, and health products all saying that the new year can be your year to get healthy – the ‘new year, new you’ that you’ll see on your social media, too. It’s easy to get discouraged seeing images of fitness models and people in terrific athletic shape – that you may feel is out of reach. Instead of starting the old resolution-to-quitting cycle, try something new this new year…
The Oldest, Best Exercise
While videos of high-intensity training may be popular online, and you have friends who swear by the latest exercise trend, the most popular exercise is also the oldest – and likely the best. Walking is something you can do as part of a relaxation practice and part of a fitness practice. You can add in length, distance, or even manage difficulty depending on your goals.
Many people may also avoid trying to achieve their goals because of long-standing limitations. Even something like starting a small walking program can be intimidating if you’re afraid it will hurt. Knee pain, back pain, unstable joints, etc can all limit your confidence before you set out to tackle a new fitness program. While physical issues can feel like road blocks, they’re more like speed bumps. They may slow you down at first, but they shouldn’t stop your journey.
Small Changes = Big Results
Instead of planning a total overhaul of your life on Jan 1 this year, plan instead for small, sustainable changes. Those small changes, added up daily, can create some pretty impressive results. Add in one walk every day. Challenge yourself to improve your diet by adding more colorful veggies or swapping water for soda at lunch.
