Do you have low back pain? Do you have a movement preference?

By: Todd Tech, PT, MPT

If you suffer from low back pain, you should know if you have a movement preference! A movement preference, or sometimes referred to a directional preference, can be an important component to your treatment, and can help guide the type of exercise that you will be prescribed. During my Physical Therapy evaluation, I will assess whether you do have a preference to certain spinal movements, and if so incorporate it into your treatment plan.

Identifying the correct movement preference allows individuals to start moving their spines in a non-painful direction, which many times will lead to improved mobility in all planes of movement. It can also provide information about which movements are painful, and those we may want to avoid until the tissue has had time to further heal.
